First separate Akron municipal cases from Summit felony cases

Akron Municipal Court

Use the Akron Municipal case search when the case was filed in that court. Its clerk includes a Criminal, Traffic & Parking Division, which is the relevant local route for many misdemeanor/traffic matters.

Summit County Common Pleas

The Summit County Clerk Criminal Division handles all felony cases within Summit County. A felony case should not be forced into the Akron Municipal search simply because the incident happened in Akron.

Other municipal court

Summit notes that misdemeanor/traffic cases are primarily handled by Akron, Barberton, and Stow municipal courts, with some mayor’s-court jurisdiction. The case caption or citation is the best court clue.

Before retrying a missing record, test the court and date range

  • ✓
Does the document say Akron Municipal Court?

Use the municipal search only when that court owns the case.

  • ✓
Is the charge a Summit felony?

The Summit Criminal Division is the clerk route for felony files and dispositions.

  • ✓
Could the case predate computerized criminal records?

The Clerk FAQ says the criminal division’s computer cases go back to 1986. An older matter can require staff/file-room research.

  • ✓
    Is the exact defendant identified?

Match case number, full name, approximate filing date, and charge before attributing a docket to someone with a common name.

Convert a search result into the court document you need

  1. 01
Capture the case number and court

Save the docket/case number, defendant name, filing year, and division while viewing the official search result.

  2. 02
    Name the filing

Ask for the judgment, sentencing entry, dismissal order, docket sheet, or another specific document. The word “record” alone can lead to unnecessary copies.

  3. 03
    Choose ordinary or certified copy

A plain copy is often enough for research. If a recipient requires certification, order the certified court copy rather than presenting a web printout as certified.

  4. 04
    Escalate older or unindexed material

Use the Summit public-record request route or clerk records staff when the online/computer index does not cover the file you are trying to locate.

Summit copy fees are separate from the case-search step

Item Current Summit Clerk charge Practical use
Computer docket printout $0.10 per page. Chronology/reference when an ordinary docket print is sufficient.
Ordinary copy $0.10 per page. Uncertified court-file document.
Certified copy $1.00 per page. Use only when certification is required; fee is published by the Criminal Division.

A missing web result is not the same as a missing court file

Keep jurisdiction, age, and access restrictions in the conclusion

The wrong municipal court, a pre-computer record, sealed/restricted material, or a Common Pleas felony searched in a municipal system can all produce an apparent miss. Record which court and date range were checked, then contact that clerk for document availability before stating that no Akron/Summit criminal court record exists.
